Abstract
The present study examined the effectiveness of human rights education program in enhancing human rights sensitivity and empathy of people working in elderly nursing homes. The participants of this study were 30 employees of elderly nursing homes situated in Chungcheongbuk-do Province. Half of the employees were assigned to the experimental group and the remaining half were assigned to the control group. Results of the present study were as follows. Firstly, human rights education program used in the present study proved to be effective in enhancing human rights sensitivity of the elderly nursing home employees. In particular, employees of the experimental group who participated in the program obtained significantly higher scores on a measure of human rights sensitivity(in terms of situation perception, consequence perception and duty perception) in post-test than in pre-test, whereas the scores of the control group employees did not differ in the two tests. Secondly, the human rights education program was also found to be effective in enhancing empathy of the employees. That is, employees of the experimental group scored higher on a measure of both cognitive and emotional empathy in post-test than in pre-test, but empathy scores of the control group did not change from pre-to post-test. Implications for these findings are discussed, and several suggestions for future research have been made.
